Baby Emmy is almost 5 years younger then my next youngest, Charlotte…so when I got pregnant I realized we were in a whole new world of baby gear! Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing reviews about the baby gear I chose and my honest reviews of the things I’ve found most helpful in her first couple months of life.
When I first started doing my research of what to buy, the two products that came up over and over again were the Dockatot and the Ollie Swaddle. Definitely the hot baby items of moment! Both aimed at helping your little one sleep better. What mommy doesn’t want that?? I went ahead and purchased both not sure if they were going to be worth the hype. Here is my honest review!
First off I have to say that Emmy has been sleeping in her Dockatot since birth, so unfortunately I don’t have any comparison to her sleep before the Dockatot. She is however an awesome sleeper! She falls asleep on her own (mostly) and now at 8 weeks sleeps from about 7:30pm – 6/6:30am with one feeding around 2/3am. I’m happy with that and I know we are on the right track towards sleeping through the night! I’ll be posting more about our routine and how I’m getting her to sleep in later posts, but here’s what I like about the Dockatot…
It’s portable!! A handle on the side of the Dockatot makes it super easy to carry from one room to the next (even with a baby in your arms). This was especially helpful when Emmy was first born. They sleep SO much, and it’s nice to have a safe, secure spot to put them down in every room. I’ve used it mostly on our bed and on the downstairs couch. It also fits in her bassinet, so that is where she slept at night for the first 4-5 weeks.
Because it can be moved from place to place, I think it made the transition to her crib that much easier. We moved her from our room to her own room just before 5 weeks. I loved having her in our room, but honestly I think by that age she became more aware of sounds and noises around, and we both slept better with her in her crib at night. With the Dockatot in her crib though, it was still a safe and familiar surrounding for her and her sleep habits did not change with the switch.
I’m also excited to have the Dockatot to bring with us when we travel! Sleeping with kiddos on the road is never as easy as it is at home, but again the Dockatot will provide her with the similar surroundings that she’s used to and hopefully give us a better nights rest while away! I’ll keep you updated when we travel for the first time this summer.
THE OLLIE SWADDLE:
We didn’t get our Ollie swaddle until she was about a week and a half old, so this time I do have a comparison! At birth we used muslin blankets (LOVE the ones from both A Little Lady Shop and Little Unicorn) and the halo sleep sack swaddle. I think the muslin blankets work well when they are first born because they don’t squirm around as much. I found the halo swaddle to be too big though for her and seemed to have a lot of extra material, even in the newborn size. Once we received our Ollie swaddles I began using those solely for her night time sleep. I will still swaddle her in muslin blankets during the day if she’s in her rock n’ play downstairs.
So…the Ollie Swaddle…here’s what I love about it. First of all the velcro tabs make it super easy to use. Most of all though I love the material. It doesn’t feel heavy but still keeps her warm at night. And it just feels good!
It also comes in this adorable box, so it makes such a cute gift!!
Both the Dockatot and the Ollie Swaddle wash really well. I use the Laundress stain remover on any stains, and wash with Mrs. Meyers baby detergent and so far both are still in pristine condition (even with a baby who spits up!) I think the only tough part with the Dockatot is getting the cover back on. It can be tricky at first and it seems like it won’t fit….but it does, just keep working at it 🙂
So are they worth the hype? Will they make your baby a miracle sleeper? Honestly I don’t think any product out there can do that. There are so many factors that make a baby sleep well. But I can say that I’m really glad I purchased them both. We use them every single day and night. She’s happy with them, and I am too!!
